Team #22) Abbie and Ryan (TAR21)

2020.09.03 10:06 scottydrewster Team #22) Abbie and Ryan (TAR21)

Team #22) Abbie and Ryan (TAR21, 5th)
The rise and fall of Abbie and Ryan is a story of soaring highs and then heartbreak across 9 legs of the Amazing Race and one that is pretty unique across all 31 seasons.
The Dating Divorcees come into the race as the athletic dating couple with Abbie a Dance teacher and Ryan who practises Jiu Jitsu. They are a little older than our traditional dating couples in their early 30's. Ryan is uber competitive and wants to beat Rachel and Dave's record of leg wins.
Leg 1 they start out strong and become somewhat villain-ish as they pass sentimental early faves Amy and Ryan for the win and the chance at $2m prize. This doesn't seem to curse them early-on as they take a second win in Leg 3 in Indonesia. At this point an alliance of Twinnies, Texas and Chippendales has started to form and Ryan in particular starts to find the Twinnies very grating. This then starts to form into more of a rivalry in later legs.
It's in Leg 7 when they start to unravel due to travel chaos at the Frankfurt airport as they miss their flight and are stranded hours behind the other teams. They turn to the Beekmans to form an allyship to run the rest of the leg together which would secure their survival as the Beekman's cant complete the synchronised swimming detour. However both are saved by the Rockers lost passports which enables both to live on.
At this point they have still only won a few legs and survival is paramount and you can tell their spirits are a little crushed as they fight against their friends to reach the F4. They have one of the most emotional legs in TAR history in their final leg in Netherlands. Again working with the Beekmans they are expecting both to be U-Turned after another Frankfurt travel debacle. Yet they are blindsided by the Chippendales who u-Turn them before the Twinnies block the U-Turn in a game-changing move.
With the other detour to complete in the rain in Amsterdam we see Abbie breaking down as she receives the last of her tips from a woman who she cries on as she finally completes the task. This raw emotion of knowing her task was done, but their race was over was a really powerful moment as they knew the $2m prize wouldn't be theirs.
A couple that were the centre of the action all through the season with both inter and intra team drama and it was very compelling seeing them go from competitive powerhouses to rootable under-dogs in the space of a few legs. A unique story for a team who I enjoyed rooting for and against throughout the season.
New nomination is Zev and Justin 2.0 a really fun team with a hilarious yet agonising loss in the F4. They were one of the highlights of the season but not on legendary status like a lot of the other teams left in the rankdown.
Current pool:
-Joe and Bill (TAR1, 3rd)
-Frank and Margarita (TAR1, 2nd)
-Ken and Gerard (TAR3, 3rd)
-Rob and Amber 1.0 (TAR7, 2nd)
-Nat and Kat (TAR17, winners)
-Zev and Justin (TAR18, 5th)
-Amy and Maya (TAR25, winners)

2020.09.01 13:28 scottydrewster Team #29) Bill and Cathi (TAR19)

Team #29) Bill and Cathi (TAR19, 5th)
This was a really tough decision as I loved this team but think the other teams in the pool have an overall stronger storyline or more iconic moments. So it pains me to cut our most recent older team of the farmer grandparents from season 19.
Bill & Cathi come into the race as your sweet older couple who are also pretty physically active for a team in their 60's. Against a number of fit young dating couples they look to be an early-out and their Leg 1 performance does nothing to dismiss that. As they struggle for hours to find the balloon clue in Taiwan they fall to last place and are luckily spared NEL, however are hours behind the 10th team.
Nevertheless they hit 1st in Leg 2 whipping through their speed bump and roadblock before losing some time in the detour. They arrive 4th at the pitstop before having to give over all their money dropping them to 7th. From Leg 5 they really move into another gear taking a handful of Top 3 finished (with 1 taxi error costing them another podium).
They shine with the self-driving in Denmark, so much so that Ernie and Cindy cruelly U-Turn them so they can secure 1st place. Bill and Cathi still hit 2nd and it starts a small rivalry between the two teams.
Their love and devotion towards each other is so inspiring to watch and one of my fave moments is between Bill and Cindy. As Cindy asks how they met as Bill says they met at school and got married straight after they graduated college together. Whilst Cindy met Ernie over a shot ski. However they then struggle in Leg 9 as they receive another NEL before finsihing last in Belgium as they get lost on a self-drive as day turns to night. However we get one final athletic flourish from them both as they have amazing bodies in their orange body building get-up.
My fave team from season 19 and a personal favourite of mine too and I wish there were other teams in the pool I could cut first. Would've been great to see them on 24 but they had an amazing run and I would've hated to see them ruin their legacy with a poor showing. They seemed to have so much fun on the race and Cathi's 'I like the view' as Bill is ascending the cliff always makes me smile. A fun competitive older team and a RIP to Bill who passed away a few years ago.
I am nominating Lyn and Karlyn the best friend Moms how became the first FF team to reach the final 3. A huge accomplishment and upset in beating out the Beauty Queens for that final finale spot but I was rooting for Dustin and Kandice.
Current pool:
-Frank and Margarita (TAR1, 2nd)
-Meredith and Gretchen (TAR7, 4th)
-Rob and Amber 1.0 (TAR7, 2nd)
-Lyn and Karlyn (TAR10, 3rd)
-Abbie and Ryan (TAR21, 5th)
-Amy and Maya (TAR25, winners)
-Tyler and Korey 2.0 (TAR31, 2nd)

2020.08.31 02:12 autobuzzfeedbot 25 Costume Details From Movies And TV Shows That Are Absolutely Amazing And Genius

  1. Throughout Little Women, Jo and Laurie are constantly swapping vests and wearing each other's clothes — Greta Gerwig explained that it symbolized the idea that they were each other's other half.
  2. Also in Little Women, each of the March sisters have a core color palette — Meg is green and lavender, Beth is brown and pink, Amy is light blue, and Jo is red and indigo.
  3. Every character in Black Panther has a specific color that they wear throughout the film — T'Challa is purple, Okoye is red, and Nakia is green.
  4. Also, when T'Challa, Okoye, and Nakia are in the casino, they're wearing red, black, and green, which are the colors of the Pan-African flag.
  5. During the series finale of Game of Thrones, the outfit Sansa wears when she officially becomes Queen in the North has nods to all of the Starks.
  6. During the series finale of Schitt's Creek, Twyla is actually wearing one of Alexis's dresses at David and Patrick's wedding — this is a great callback to when Alexis gave Twyla a bag of her clothes.
  7. The holes in Ransom's sweaters in Knives Out were purposeful — they helped illustrate that he didn't take care of his things and they gave him "a touch of that disrespect."
  8. On Stranger Things, when Mike, Dustin, Will, and Lucas dress as the Ghostbusters for Halloween, you can see that Will's costume looks more handmade than the others.
  9. Also on Stranger Things, if you look closely, you can see that Robin has drawn all over her Converse, and the drawings apparently include the phrase "God likes you of course" and a lot of boobs.
  10. In Get Out, during the party scene, everyone is wearing either black or white and there are some pops of red — the black and white is meant to symbolize the racial tensions in the film and red is often associated with secret societies.
  11. In Booksmart, Molly wears a turtleneck, blazer, and tights on the last day of school, which allows her to stand out and appear more mature compared to her classmates, who are dressed for summer — this outfit was inspired by Olivia Wilde, who felt like an outsider when she first arrived in LA because she was still dressing for the East Coast.
  12. Following Denny's death in Season 2 of Grey's Anatomy, you can spot Izzie wearing the sweater she knitted for him while she's grieving.
  13. Also on Grey's Anatomy, during the 300th episode, George and Cristina's doppelgängers are actually wearing clothes that resemble what those characters used to wear.
  14. All of the characters' costumes in the Harry Potter movies changed slightly from film to film — except for Snape's signature all-black outfit and cape.
  15. In Deadpool 2, Wade is actually sporting a shirt featuring Taylor Swift's cats, Meredith and Olivia — a nod to Ryan Reynolds and Taylor's friendship.
  16. On Scandal, after Olivia decides to walk away from Fitz, she actually begins to wear more vibrant colors — like yellow, orange, purple, and red — because she's "reinventing herself" during Season 5.
  17. In Spider-Man, Peter Parker is wearing Green Goblin's colors, while Norman Osborn is wearing Spider-Man's signature colors at Thanksgiving dinner.
  18. In Watchmen, Cal and Angela's children wear owl and pirate costumes, which is a nod to Nite Owl and Tales of the Black Freighter, which was a pirate comic book in the original Watchmen comics.
  19. When Jack and Rebecca go on their first date on This Is Us, you can see that Jack's wearing a green T-shirt — this is the magic shirt he later gives Kate at the pool during Season 1.
  20. In Widows, as the movie progresses, Veronica's clothing becomes darker and darker as more secrets are exposed — eventually, she's wearing all black.
  21. In Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, if you look closely, you can see that part of the curtains in Donna's room are missing and it's because the Dynamos used the material for their outfits in "When I Kissed the Teacher."
  22. Also in Mamma Mia! Here We Go Again, Sophie is wearing a butterfly-patterned dress during "My Love, My Life," which is an homage to young Donna, who wore a butterfly necklace.
  23. On Killing Eve, when a group of assassins storm Villanelle's apartment in Season 2, you can see that they steal her iconic pink dress from Season 1.
  24. On Outlander, after Brianna travels back in time and visits Lallybroch, she's actually given a bunch of Claire's old clothes from Season 1 in order to fit in.
  25. And finally, during Season 1 of Chilling Adventures of Sabrina, Sabrina wears a red dress with a lace collar, which is actually an homage to Mia Farrow's iconic dress in Rosemary's Baby.

2020.08.23 19:21 lostinalibrary Does anyone have any good sports romance recs with steamy scenes where the sport actually plays a role in the book beyond ‘I play X’? (bonus points if it’s a rom-com)

Basically I’m talking about books like the Pucked series by Helena Hunting (Pucked Over and Pucked Off were my favorites of that series).
Ideally I’m looking for a book with steam, some laughs, and where the sports job actually plays a part in the book beyond a character saying ‘I play X’ or one ‘gotta go to practice babe’ scene.
I really enjoyed the Pucked series because each book revolved around a different couple AND there were lots of cameos from characters from previous books. I also loved how the Pucked series showed the couples working through what it’s like to date some whose job it is to travel all the time. Or have multiple practices a day. Or have women literally throwing themselves at them. So the job caused some conflict they needed to work out.
I’ve read the Hot Jocks series by Kendall Ryan and found it to be just okay. I didn’t like how there were rarely any cameos from the other players, and the sport barely played a role in the book. Plus all of the sex scenes were nearly identical for each couple (Pucked series gave us variety). I liked how in the Pucked series you got to feel that comradery of being on a team and it had scenes at practices and games which didn’t really happen in Hot Jocks.
I’ve read a few other sports books like Blindsided by Amy Daws (too fluffy for me, but if you like friends-to-lovers then you might like it), Puck Me Secretly by Odette Stone (no offense, but this was one of the worst books I’ve read in my life), a few of the Off-campus books by Elle Kennedy (once again, the sport barely played a role, and I didn’t get that part of a team feeling, and the college angst wasn’t my thing), and the All In series by Helena Hunting (this one had me missing the humor and sports focus from her Pucked series).
TLDR: I guess what I’m looking for is a sports romance that has humor, steamy scenes, is dual pov, actually has the sport (the practices, teammates, and games) play a decent sized role, and if it’s part of a series to have characters have decent sized cameos in the other books. I guess I want to read more books like the Pucked series. Lately I’ve been on a hockey kick, but I’m open to reading about other sports too!
Any recs? Or am I being too specific?
Thanks in advanced!

2020.07.17 20:45 thewhitemarker Team #159: Trey and Lexi (TAR21)

159. Trey and Lexi (Season 21, 3rd Place)

Clearing up a nominee spot that’s been around for about 75 turns now...
Trexi have a very strong run in TAR21. They win three legs and finish in the top three a total of nine times. They had the lead heading into the final roadblock of the season where Lexi has to recall the translations of ‘hello’ and ‘goodbye’ in the countries they recently visited. Unfortunately she is unable to complete the task in a timely manner, allow the goat farmers and chippendales to pass them.
This college football player and cheerleader duo are almost exactly what you expect them to be. Amicable. Pleasant. Friendly.
Of course, those three words are basically synonyms, and that’s why they’re getting cut here.
We really don’t learn to much about Trey and Lexi throughout their run and they fail to standout, not only among the teams in TAR21 but also among the various cookie-cutter young, competent, dating teams that make it near the end. They find themselves in an alliance with Natalie and Nadiya and Jaymes and James and we see them u-turn Jaymes and James, knowing they had already passed, to ensure Ryan and Abbie’s elimination. But they are always secondary characters and their allies, with bigger personalities, eat up much more camera time.
Overall, they were perfectly nice, strong racers, and presumably great people, but they lack emphasis and come off as a bit too vanilla on the show.
My nominee is going to be Lake and Michelle, TAR9’s 6th place finishers.
When Lake and Michelle weren’t yelling at each other they were actually kind of funny. Unfortunately those moments were few and far between.
The current pool is:
  • Mary and Peach (TAR2)
  • Godlewski Family (TAR8)
  • Lake and Michelle (TAR9)
  • Uchenna and Joyce 2.0 (TAR11)
  • Nary and Jamie (TAR20)
  • Vanessa and Ralph (TAR20)
  • Amy and Maya (TAR25)

“I am the mother and primary joint conservator of Tylee Ryan, age 3, and Colby Ryan, age 10. Joseph Ryan is not Colby’s father and does not exercise visitation with him at present.
“Recently, in late July, 2006 my daughter began expressing fear of her father and became resistant to going to his house. Since she is only three, she cannot always articulate her feelings but indicated her father is “crashing into her” and she does not want to visit. Previously, she had liked going to see her father. I have taken her to a play therapist to try and find out if anything happened that should be cause for concern.
“With no prompting from me, after this behavior from my daughter began, my son then disclosed on or about August 6, 2006 that Respondent had been inappropriate with him when we were still together and living in Hays County and had threatened to harm me if he ever told what happened. I have taken him to the Hays County authorities to be interviewed. There is now an ongoing Child Protective Services investigation (I did make one of several reports) and an indecency with a child investigation ongoing in Hays County.
“I request that possession be suspended between Tylee and her father until the criminal investigation is resolved, or that in the alternative, the court make orders that will protect the health and safety of the child.”

2020.07.01 21:23 gdelgi [OTHER] Gypsy (Laurents/Styne/Sondheim) – UNPRODUCED SCREENPLAY

Just check out this page for the detailed nitty-gritty. TL;DR: Barbra Streisand wanted really badly to do a remake of Gypsy, and it was on and off more times than lights hooked up to a Clapper switch in the bedroom of an argumentative elderly couple, with a host of hold-ups (authors Arthur Laurents and Stephen Sondheim being two, Universal Pictures -- a studio that first expressed interest, activated it, and then sent it into turnaround -- and STX Entertainment -- a distributoco-financier that joined and then pulled the plug when another financieproducer dropped out -- being two more), a handful of prospective directors (Matthew Warchus, Ryan Murphy, Robert Luketic, Barry Levinson), a few possible co-stars (Tom Hanks, Lady Gaga, John Travolta, Alec Baldwin), and two screenwriters (Julian Fellowes and Richard LaGravenese).
Barbra is now off the project (a shame, as while I agree that she was probably too old and there wasn't enough CGI in the world, I like the poetry of her book-ending her career with a defining female role), though her co-producer Joel Silver stayed on, and Amy Sherman-Palladino (Emmy-winning writedirectoexec producecreator of The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel) is working on a new version entirely.
But before the project became someone else's baby, it was Barbra's. And in the summer of 2014, she brought in LaGravenese (Oscar-nominated writer of The Fisher King, prior screen adaptor of The Last Five Years, and a previous collaborator on The Mirror Has Two Faces) to rewrite Fellowes' initial screenplay. When promoting The Last Five Years in February 2015, LaGravenese spoke at length to about his work on Gypsy:
I just rewrote Gypsy for Streisand and they’re now pulling that production together, they're looking for a director [...] Barbra and I rewrote it and it was great working with her, and I think she's going to be an amazing Rose, so I hope it comes together.
Though he couldn't answer who might direct, he further elaborated to
I finished [the screenplay] before Christmas. Barbra and I worked on it from September through the fall. I had the best time with her. I can't even tell you. It was like a fantasy come true. I did my first draft and went to her house to do rewrites. She's so meticulous in the best possible way. We went through it page by page by page. I played Herbie and she played Rose. I'd play Louise and she'd play Rose. We laughed and had the best time together. I hope it gets made because having her sing that score and play that part would be the penultimate moment for those of us who love that musical. She's just extraordinary to work with. She cares so much. She's so passionate about it. She's so smart. We had such a great time [...] The script is at the studio. Joel Silver is a very tenacious producer. I hear that he's going to make sure this happens.
When asked how he got involved, he said:
...she sent me Gypsy to read and it just evolved into wanting to do a rewrite on it, which was primarily about putting Arthur Laurents' book back into it, because it's the best fucking book of any musical. [Laughs] And then expanding and doing things I've always wanted to do in terms of character for Louise and the relationship between June and Louise. It's a tough show to make cinematic. "Some People" is a very tough song to make cinematic. It's a dynamic song, but it takes place in a kitchen. So how do you film that? It's the toughest number in the show. All of those things we worked on were really fun.
(This was a refrain he repeated to Playbill in the summer of 2016 when it looked like production would begin the following year: "The difficult problem [with Gypsy] is making it cinematic. That's the nut to crack. Coming up with a concept that helps to make it cinematic. For instance, you have 'Some [People],' which is this gigantic song which she sings in a kitchen, so how do you make that [cinematic]? These are the things that we worked on, making things more visual...")
And, of course, when queried about her suitability age-wise, he was ready for that too:
I think it's more about her singing that score. She's an actress and it's a movie. When Sarah Bernhardt was in her 70s she was performing younger roles. It doesn't matter to me. She looks fantastic, first of all. I'm not going to be watching the movie doing math. I just want to hear her do that part. I know she can do it. For those who are going to have that problem, nothing we do is going to help that. They're going to be out to comment on that. I'd rather have her play the part and sing that score and fuck the rest of it.
Now, I can't claim that the script I'm about to give you is the final product. LaGravenese made that much clear to Playbill in 2016: "Barry Levinson is directing, and he came on with a concept. It's hard to describe without giving it away. He came up with a cinematic concept that I think works, but it means that things have to be changed a little bit. People have to embrace the fact that it won't be the theatrical Gypsy -- it will be the film Gypsy. But all the songs are there."
The script I'm about to give you is a good deal closer than that. (Judging by the title page date, it may well be the rewrite completed in sessions with Barbra just before Christmas.)
But a script I have for you!
If you feel like reliving what might have been, or are just curious to see what a different screenwriter's take on Gypsy than the Roz Russell film would be, click here to view and download.

2020.06.15 05:47 gthomas37 List Of Obscure/Boring/Purple Edit Contestants From Seasons 1-16

Here is a complete list of contestants from Borneo-Micronesia that I find to be obscure and/or boring. Hopefully someone stumbles across this or something. Anyways here you go...
Dirk- Just a really boring dud that no one ever remembers
Considerations- Joel, Stacey, Ramona
Australian Outback-
Mitchell- Honestly boring contestant that I literally only remember for being tall
Nick- I couldn't ever remember his name and he was so boring. Just a very boring and average person.
Considerations- Kel, Mad Dog
Africa (I really dislike this season so sorry if there's a lot)-
Jessie- Remember that she was sick. That is all
Diane- She had 1 confessional and got sick
Carl- Grumpy old man with no interesting characteristics.
Considerations- Linda, Kim J.
Patricia- Remember that she was Maraamu's mom. That's it
Gabe- Cause like he only got interesting when he got stupid.
Zoe- The OG purple edit who had 5 confessionals?! I didn't even learn her name till the merge.
Considerations- Peter, Gina, Robert
The whole Sook Jai tribe (minus Shii Ann and Robb) and John/Tanya- They were all boring or forgettable and that's why they have never returned. (John, Tanya, Jed, Stephanie, Erin, Ken, Penny, Jake)
No one was considered because they were almost all obscure except for Ghandia, Robb, Shii Ann, Ted, Helen, Jan, Clay, and Brian
Everyone from the pre-merge minus Daniel and Shawna (sort of)
I mean they were all really boring or forgettable (the pre-merge was kinda a boring section of Amazon)
Considerations: Shawna, Butch
Pearl Islands-
Skinny Ryan- He was skinny?
Michelle- Only thing I remember is when she chugged that gross smoothie when she wasn't supposed to.
Trish- I mean she did nothing till her boot episode.
Shawn- Fought with Fairplay and lost Rupert's spear, but still managed to be boring
Considerations- Nicole, Osten, Tijuana
All Stars-
I mean they are all stars none of them are obscure so there you go
No Considerations
Brook- Voted out and that
John P.- Wait he was on the show?
Mia- Fought with Twila and that's about it
Brady- Now are we sure he was on the show?
Lisa- She was boring and sucked at the game. Goodbye
*Man I should've just said "Vanuatu Pre-Merge"*
Considerations- Dolly, Leann
Wanda/Jonathan- Left on Day 2. If someone could tell me one thing about Jonathan I would be seriously impressed.
Ashlee- Zoe Zanidakis wanna be that left pretty early
Jeff- Got hurt and was dating Kim.
Kim- Boring and Dull/Lazy
Willard- Never said anything and was boringggggg
Ibrehem- He was quiet and never did anything.
Considerations- Janu, Gregg
EVERYONE FROM THE PRE-MERGE (except Brian and Amy)- Jim, Morgan, Brianna, Brooke, Blake, Margaret- All nobody's who were so forgettable and were voted out because of how boring/lazy they were.
Brandon- Farm boy that was sorta interesting, but again just very forgettable.
Considerations- Lydia, Cindy
Melinda- Cirie's friend and underrated in my opinion
Everyone from the Swapped La Mina Tribe (minus Terry)- Misty, Ruth-Marie, Dan, Nick, Austin, Sally
La Mina was a snooze fest compared to Casaya and none of them were interesting so.... Also I can't tell the difference between Nick and Austin.
Considerations- Tina, Bruce
Cook Islands-
Sekou- First boot and not super memorable.
Cecilia- WHO?
J.P.- Bossy boring guy
Stephannie- She got voted out because of mash potatoes ): but forgettable
Cristina- Average lady but not interesting TV
Flicka- I only remember the hair.
Rebecca- Again WHO? Most forgettable castaway ever
Considerations- Billy, Jenny, Sundra, Becky
All Pre-Merge Players (except Lisi and Rocky)- Jessica, Erica, Sylvia, Gary, Liliana (possibly most obscure contestant ever...), Rita, Anthony
All so forgettable. I mean all these people were not memorable and just so boring.
Edgardo- Hidden four horsemen member
Considerations- I think I covered them all
Aaron- Just a very non-interesting person.
Considerations- Leslie, Jaime
All the fans that didn't make the merge (Mary, Mikey, Joel, Chet, Kathy, Tracy)

Well I hope you enjoy this list sorry if I missed a few. I will respond to comments if you have any and the reasons I didn't do the rest of the seasons is because I am currently doing a survivor marathon and these are just the seasons I have seen. (:

2020.06.14 15:04 portlane Julie Lofgren (February 27, 1942 - May 28, 2020)

February 27, 1942 - May 28, 2020
Julie Lofgren passed away peacefully on May 28, 2020 after three courageous battles with cancer, showing us the meaning of bravery and being a true fighter. She was born at St. Joseph Hospital in Vancouver, WA to A. Warren and Dorothy Johnson on February 27, 1942. A lifelong resident of the Pacific Northwest, Julie lived in Vancouver, Camas, Hazel Dell, Bend, Hockinson, Battle Ground, and Yacolt.
Julie graduated from Battle Ground High School and attended Clark College. It was at Clark College that she met the love of her life, John Lofgren, and their marriage spanned 52 years.
Julie liked to work with numbers and meet new people which fit perfectly with her 25 year career as manager of Columbian Newspaper Credit Union. She followed that with 10 years of service in the Clark County Fair accounting office. She accomplished all of this while being a great mother to two children.
Julie truly believed in family and was unselfishly caring, loving, and encouraging. She loved to entertain and host family events. Mom/Grandma Julie built traditions with her kids such as playing board games, Old Maid, Yahtzee, and coloring books. Her bottomless Christmas stockings were legendary. She spent countless hours supporting her children and grandchildren at school events, sporting events, and dance studios.
Julie had many interests including sewing, knitting, crocheting, card and dice games, ceramics, music, walking/hiking, and travelling, especially to the Hawaiian islands. She was a member of a monthly Bunco group (for over 50 years), GWFC, and the Quarry Senior Living vocal group. Julie attended Laurelwood Baptist Church.
Julie loved chickens and cardinals, but had a true soft spot for cats. Her cat friends included Big Boy, Middie, and Evee.
Julie is survived by her brother, A. Warren (Nancy) Johnson Jr.; sister, Linda (Rodney) Nishimura; son, Eric (Kendra) Lofgren; daughter, Amy (Ronnie) Mason; grandchildren, Mallori (Adam), Haylee (Ryan), Madelyn, and Jonathan; great-grandchild, Aubrey; and many cousins, nieces, nephews, and lifelong friends.
She was preceded in death by her husband, John; and her parents, A. Warren and Dorothy Johnson.
In lieu of flowers, the family requests memorial donations be made to the American Cancer Society or the Humane Society For Southwest Washington.
A memorial service will be announced at a later date.

As a Black woman, I'm really disappointed to see the lack of history, studies and references in your AMA responses. I spend a lot of time educating myself and my family on Black history in the U.S. and Black history globally. I read international news and stay a part of wide reaching travel groups to see what life is like outside of America. I travel outside of the country any chance I get and this AMA has really colored me to BLM as not having themselves together with hard and fast facts. `You need strong answers. Defund the police? Ok, how? Replace it with what? You cannot remove a system without replacing it.` This is the biggest call for Black Americans (I cannot speak on other Blacks or Africans). We need an AGENDA with strong backing. Or the call for resources to STUDY items that would support the necessary agenda to improve the lives of Black Americans. `I'm done reading this AMA because it's not. It's a lot of reposting and saying going to BLM website.` But I do have one question, what will you do with this information that you've received on Reddit? Will you actually give Black Americans the agenda they need to be able to focus on positive reform in their own communities?

I just looked it up in the WIPO database. The Department of the Air Force is pursuing classifications 6, 12, 14, 16, 18, 20, 21, 24, 26, 28, 34, 35, 41. Netflix Studios 16, 25, 28, and 41. `So it looks like they will conflict over 16, 28, and 41:` * Class 16: Paper and cardboard; printed matter; bookbinding material; photographs; stationery and office requisites, except furniture; adhesives for stationery or household purposes; drawing materials and materials for artists; paintbrushes; instructional and teaching materials; plastic sheets, films and bags for wrapping and packaging; printers' type, printing blocks. * Class 28: Games, toys and playthings; video game apparatus; gymnastic and sporting articles; decorations for Christmas trees. * Class 41: Education; providing of training; entertainment; sporting and cultural activities. `This means they're basically going to clash over naming rights in merchandising, and they'll probably have to carve out Class 41 at a finer-grained subclass level.` In Japan they're both screwed, as a company there has 14, 16, 18, 21, 24, and 25 locked down since 2003.

Very few people will support those who have consistently been advocating against them, even when those who traditionally opposed them are suddenly aligned with them. `Putting aside decades of animosity to stand together is the right thing to do, and also incredibly difficult, which was pretty much the point of stirring that animosity for decades. ` It doesn’t matter which side you are on, the dynamic is the same. The BLM crowd thinks the 2A crowd is all racists and the 2A crowd thinks the BLM crowd is all looters. Both are obviously false, and yet our distrust of “the other” keeps the obvious truth from being recognized. Again, almost as if that was the entire point of creating false divisions. `It isn’t black vs white, it isn’t right vs left, it’s the people vs the state. We the people share a common enemy, but we ignore that truth to hold on to the lie. ` Break the paradigm.

2020.06.04 20:14 Wandering-Tiger [S] Tiger Island: Winners at War CAST REVEAL!

It's time for Tiger Island's biggest season yet as the show heads back to Tanzania to see 24 former winners duke it out for two million dollars! Who will prevail out of the largest and most competitive cast to date? This is Tiger Island!
Meet the Cast:
Chungu (gold tribe):
Jonathan Oeil-Penien (Winner of Tiger Island: Borneo, 6th place on Tiger Island: All-Stars, 15th place on Tiger Island: Philippines) - The original Tiger Island champion, Jonathan set off the series’s tone as one of the most idiosyncratic on the sub with his mystifying win all the way back in Borneo. Returning for All-Stars, Jonathan’s keen eye for strategy showed through once again as he managed to shake the target on his back and make it all the way to the final six, where he was shockingly evacuated from the game. Jonathan got a chance to return to his former glory in the Philippines, but ended up on the ill-fated Tingnan tribe, which never won an immunity challenge. Even as the series’s original winner, Jonathan survived three votes before his tribemates, David and Hailey, at last took him out of the game. Coming back once again to defend his crown, can Jonathan stand erect and prove his classic game to a cast from all generations of the series?
Angela Bechtold-Sinema (Winner of Tiger Island: Panama and runner-up of Tiger Island: Heroes vs. Villains) - One of the most unlikely villains in the entire series, Angela came into Panama as an unassuming, middle-aged professor who made a splash by asserting her minority rights against the men after the swap, using the super idol to blindside Laurel. Going into the merge, she initially played the men and women against one another before taking the men out, leaving an all-female final three. Once there, Angela convinced Clara to make the most shocking move of the season and blindside her closest ally, Yu, on her way to win the game by just one vote. She returned with her villainous tactics once again and spearheaded a strong alliance of fellow villains, including fellow winner Ramsey and All-Star Conner. After losing a rock draw just before the merge, Angela used the Heroes to take out her former adversaries on the villains and ultimately ensure a final three of herself, Ramsey, and Conner. Unlike Panama, she didn’t have a clear goat to take to the end like she did in Clara, and ended up losing to Ramsey in a landslide as he became the first two-time winner. In a rematch, can Angela triumph over Ramsey and claim her second crown?
Kerri Calder (9th place on Tiger Island: Guatemala, winner of Tiger Island: Micronesia, and 17th place on Tiger Island: Heroes vs. Villains) - Kerri has a true rollercoaster ride of a career on Tiger Island, becoming the first person to ever find a hidden immunity idol during Guatemala, but then the first person ever to be voted out with one in her possession. Already a local legend, Kerri turned her legacy around on Micronesia, when she carried a dominant Favorites majority into the merge and destroyed the Fans, ultimately facing off against her greatest ally, Tamara, in the final two. After an unprecedented 4-4 tie, Kerri ended up winning Fans vs. Favorites and redeemed her legacy. Returning as a Hero four seasons later, Kerri decided to break with her loyal legacy by flipping on the very first vote to avoid being the victim of a rock draw, after which she was never able to work her way out of the minority again and she became the season’s fourth boot. Can Kerri continue her pattern with another triumph on her fourth time out and keep her game from going south again?
Bill Vargas (Winner of Tiger Island: Redemption Island and Tiger Island: Game Changers) - Starting Redemption Island off on the weak San Carlos tribe, Bill and his tribe seemed doomed for destruction until he rallied them into a comeback and carried numbers into the merge, after which he struck down members of the opposing tribe and some of his own allies to carry his two closest allies, Ryan and Reynold, into the finals. With so much blood on his hands, Bill defended himself against an apprehensive jury to win the game over Ryan by just one vote. Showing resilience, Bill changed his strategy up in Game Changers, connecting himself to power couple Becky and Zeke as the blood on their hands piled up. His under-the-radar strategy paid off as the jury proved resentful against the two and awarded Bill a win much more decisive than his first. One of three repeat winners playing this season and the only one with a perfect record, can Bill pull off a third win and show his stripes once again?
Ibuki Lyons (5th place on Tiger Island: Nicaragua and winner of Tiger Island: Caramoan) - The winner of the second Fans vs. Favorites, Ibuki started off his Tiger Island career on one of the most famous seasons, Nicaragua. There, he played a shady and cutthroat game where he flipped on allies such as Candace and David, toppling a fan favorite in Zeke Tolkien as well. Ultimately, though, the target on his back grew too big and he went out at the final five. Five seasons later, he came back in Caramoan and led the dominant Favorites into the merge, where he again staged brutal blindsides of social players Natalie and Max. The target on his back came too much once again at the final six, but he managed to save himself with an idol and then win the final two immunity challenges to bring him through into the finals, where he won the season in a landslide. Can he replicate his feat in Fans vs. Favorites or will the target on his back come back to bite him yet again?
Nadia Berging (Winner of Tiger Island: Kaoh Rong) - On Kaoh Rong, Nadia started off with a wild time in Cambodia when her closest ally, Kevin, found himself in trouble but managed to save himself with an idol at only the second Tribal Council. Though she lost Kevin after the swap, Nadia teamed up with her frenemy, River, to run the post-merge by playing the other factions off of one another, taking out key threats in Daley, Leilani, and CB on their way to the finals along with their goat, Graham. In the end, Nadia pulled off a win you’d only see in the movies when her strategic game won out over River’s more physical game and proved that she’s not just an everyday player. Can she pull out another win against fellow Tiger Island royalty?
Dan Bajer (Winner of Tiger Island: Millennials vs. Gen X) - After spending the pre-merge kinda dark and quiet, Dan came alive after the merge to side with underdogs Miranda and Duncan and fellow power player, Reese. After helping Miranda and Duncan become the comeback kids, Dan showed them their execution days by betraying them once again, along with their ally Zeystev. Dan’s final threats, Morton and Gus, joined his crimson tide of blood soon after and he found himself in the final three. Despite all the blood on his hands, Dan proved his game was never just a fool’s song by narrowly winning the game over Jenni. Will Dan again be able to call upon the forces from above and net another win for himself?
Elsa Bridgert (Winner of Tiger Island: Ghost Island) - Elsa’s winning game in Ghost Island nearly met an early end when an unfortunate early swap put her in the minority, only for her and her ally Zach to work together and stage a blindside on early threat Terry. Elsa kept control into the merge, taking control of the game with Alec and Emma before the double Tribal saw her lose her grip on the game and end up in the minority, powerless as her new allies, Zach and Kelsey, went home. At the final seven, however, Elsa managed to pull a surprise blindside on power player Deli and make the finals with her former allies, Alec and Emma, after all, where the jury awarded her resilient gameplay with a victory. Can she handle the challenges of season 40 and make the end once again?
Tamu (green tribe):
Victoria Moobande (Winner of Tiger Island: Africa, 8th place on Tiger Island: All-Stars, and winner of Tiger Island: South Pacific) - All the way back in season 3, Victoria managed to play a peachy-keen, traditional game where her alliance held power the entire way until Tobi une.xpectedly went on an immunity run at the last minute. Unfazed, Victoria convinced Tobi to take her to the final two regardless, where she pulled off a surprise victory against him by only one vote. Returning for All-Stars, Victoria once again slipped through into the merge with a powerful alliance, but this time met opposition she couldn’t overcome when the game split 4-4 at the final eight. With nowhere to run, Victoria and her four stood firm and went to rocks, where bad luck ended up taking her out of the game. Returning along with fellow rock draw victim Kipp for South Pacific, Victoria ran her tribe once again on her third time out, but found herself on the bottom after the merge when her ally, Louis, got blindsided. Shockingly, Victoria managed to flip the most loyal person in the game, Jack, over to her side and played an idol on her right-hand man, Doug, to take control all the way to Day 38, when she blindsided Doug for his likability. Before the jury the next day, Victoria managed to tie Jack’s game with four jury votes each, but won the game on the revote, becoming Tiger Island’s second two-time winner and also the second to win via tiebreaker. Never having had been properly voted out, can Victoria continue her streak and net herself a third win this time around?
Casey deGilet (4th place in Tiger Island: Pearl Islands and winner of Tiger Island: All-Stars) - Another old-school dynamo, Casey played a steady game on Pearl Islands and seemed destined for the Final Tribal Council until his closest allies, Kelsey and Cam, betrayed him at the final four, only to end up losing the game to outsider Whitney. Returning the very next season, Casey kept fellow winner Maddy as a shield through into the merge before he found himself in the final four as the outsider this time, facing down a united Taboga three. Winning the final two immunity challenges, Casey took out jury threats Sam and Don before truly beating the best and winning the All-Star title over legendary player, Rayna Bean, in a landslide vote. Now on another All-Star season, will Casey once again claim the crown?
Sofia Progresso (Winner of Tiger Island: Guatemala) - Another All-Star player and local legend, Sofia played a quiet yet dominant game throughout Guatemala, making it to the final three with her closest ally, Kass, in tow, where they surprisingly struck down the biggest threat in Aidan. Once in the finals, Sofia’s strong social game and intense jury performance earned her the win over Kass by only one vote. Can she prove herself in a modern setting and earn off her stripes against the best of the best?
Aiden Gonzalez (Winner of Tiger Island: Fiji and 5th place on Tiger Island: Heroes vs. Villains) - During Fiji, Aiden established himself as one of Tiger Island’s most unlikely winners ever by teaming up with a notoriously unlikable alliance Pablo, Nicholas, Greta, and Trey. Shockingly, he managed to convince the alliance to turn on one another at the final five and take out Trey, before getting Pablo to force a tie against Greta at the final four, at which point he got through to the final three and easily won the season. Returning for Heroes vs. Villains, Aiden found himself in an underdog position when the Heroes got decimated, but he and his underdog alliance of Jasoi and Rayna managed to slip through the cracks after the merge and convince the Villains to turn on Maddy and Abby. He lost Jasoi at the final eight, but then played an idol to blindside legendary player Rango right after! After his goddamned loss, Aiden pulled out immunity to save himself once again, but had nowhere to turn at the final five and finally saw his game come to an end. Whether he’s in power or on the bottom again this season, can Aiden get himself another win?
Shawn Fitzgerald (Winner of Tiger Island: China and 12th place on Tiger Island: Blood vs. Water) - Shawn made a splash on his very first episode of Tiger Island, misplaying the idol but holding a commanding majority for the rest of the game afterwards, taking his strong alliance of three all the way to the finals, where he narrowly won the game. Shawn’s enigmatic game got another chance on Blood vs. Water when he returned alongside his daughter, Brett, and ended up again leading a powerful alliance before an inopportune swap put him in danger. Eventual runner-up and unlikely power player, Susan, ultimately blindsided him and he went on to lose to Redemption Island queen Becky in the final duel. Can Shawn return to his former glory this time around and win once again?
Katharine Jenssen (Winner of Tiger Island: One World and 5th place on Tiger Island: Game Changers) - Another baffling winner, Katharine’s all-female tribe seemed doomed on One World, until a swap saved her chances and took her through to the merge, where she teamed up with her ally, Brooke, to enact revenge on the men’s tribe and send all the peons out of the game. Sliding into the final three with Brooke and Kacey, Katharine defended her game against an aggressive jury and made up for her social game with her strategy, earning the title of Sole Survivor. On Game Changers, Katharine found herself in an early minority but was unable to pull herself out that time, losing her ally Travis in a tied vote and rock draw, but prolonging her bottomfeeder run into the merge all the way to the final six, where she formed an unlikely alliance with Zeke to blindside legend Rango. With her last ally, Hailey, with immunity though, she was unable to break the powerful threesome of Bill, Zeke, and Becky at the final five and finally saw her underdog game come to an end. Will Katharine be dealt a better hand on her third time out and manage to grab the crown once again?
Andrew Fisch (12th place on Tiger Island: Palau and winner of Tiger Island: Cambodia) - Originally playing in Palau, Andrew found his game short of measuring up and ended up in the minority, banking on a myth of Tom flipping and losing out once he didn’t, cut short of the merge. Returning for Second Chances, Andrew found an unlikely ally in Izzy and it was opposite day from his Palau game as he held control going into the merge. Cracking the codes of how the jury would vote, Andrew brought the two biggest goats in the game, Michele and Travis, into the final three, where he unanimously won one of Tiger Island’s biggest seasons ever. Can he don the struggle once again and pull out another win or will it prove a Sisyphean quest?
Dawn Griffin (Winner of Tiger Island: Heroes vs. Healers vs. Hustlers) - Easily cruising into the merge after only attending one Tribal beforehand, Dawn found herself at the head of an alliance alongside Wetty, but soon flipped against Jenn to take her out and instead ally with power player Jasmine, taking her Rubenesque charms with her to the final three, where she narrowly won the game against her and Wetty. Playing an old-school game with only a few pivotal betrayals, can Dawn replicate her feat once again against 19 other winners?
Wiki (red tribe):
Merritt Simon (Winner of Tiger Island: The Australian Outback) - Winning all the way back in Season 2, Merritt oversaw the first big flip of the entire series when she engineered a blindside against her own tribemates, Julia and Carly. Her alliance nonetheless narrowly won out after surviving two past votes tiebreakers, and a key final immunity challenge win let Merritt carry her ally, Lindsey, into the final two where she won by only one vote. Back a whopping thirty-eight seasons later, can Merritt break the other winners’ hearts and claim the two million for herself?
Maddy Broode (Winner of Tiger Island: The Amazon, 9th place on Tiger Island: All-Stars, 10th place on Tiger Island: Heroes vs. Villains, 5th place on Tiger Island: Blood vs. Water) - All the way back in Season 6, Maddy’s gameplay horrified yet mystified viewers when she made the most of being swapped into the minority, getting Sam and Kiall to flip on the men during the first-ever battle-of-the-sexes season. Carrying her dominance into the merge, Maddy then disposed of Sam and Kiall and took her closest ally, Frances, to the end for a unanimous victory. Taking her record into All-Stars, Maddy evaded the target on her back by turning the tribe against heroes Batbayar and Shane and making it all the way to the merge, where she was narrowly blindsided. In Heroes vs. Villains, Maddy unsurprisingly ran the Villains tribe by pulling in a disciple in Rango, only for him to blindside her when she took a shot at fellow winner Angela. Maddy played for a fourth time in Blood vs. Water alongside her husband, Chuck, and unsurprisingly ran the tribe of returning players. She then reversed the curse of being the merge boot on her past two seasons by playing an idol and blindsiding Rayna Bean’s son, Preston, just after the merge. She and Chuck then dominated the merge along with the duo of Kelsey and Susan, but ended up in the minority and voted out once again, only to return from Redemption Island and claim fifth place after failing to win immunity against the united duos of Louis and Oliver and Kelsey and Susan. Now playing for a fifth time, the most of any Tiger Island player, can Maddy finally claim another crown necklace?
Gabriela Bruno-Ludwig (Winner of Tiger Island: Cook Islands) - Gabriela, along with the other members of the all-Hispanic Waititi tribe, dominated the premerge portion of the game after the swap, carrying numbers into the merge where they decimated the rival tribe as well as threats from their own side like Eduardo and Lita. Ultimately, Gabriela tried to pull a blindside on Dante at the final four, only to fail when he pulled out the idol. Gabriela went on to defeat legendary player Dante in the finals anyway, her physically dominant game taking the victory over his strategic prowess and crowning her the winner. Back after twenty-seven seasons, can Gabriela prove she can still perform in the series’s modern era?
Ramsey Peris (Winner of Tiger Island: Gabon and Tiger Island: Heroes vs. Villains, 12th place on Tiger Island: Game Changers) - Coming from rough beginnings in Gabon, Ramsey’s Puru tribe seemed doomed until he flipped the game on its head and got the rival Shira tribe to collapse in on itself, taking his allies Nellie and Roddi all the way to the end of the game where he won in a landslide. Three seasons later, in Heroes vs. Villains, Ramsey once again took a tight trio to the end when his alliance of Angela and Conner entered the merge in the minority but played the other Villains against the Heroes to make it all the way to the final three, where Ramsey won the game once again. Playing for a third time on Game Changers, Ramsey again seemed well-positioned going into the merge, this time with the numbers, but fell victim to a shocking idol play from El Diablo when his majority failed to split the votes. Tiger Island’s first two-time winner, can Ramsey claim the throne a third time and prove himself as the greatest once and for all?
David “Dave” Zdenko (Winner of Tiger Island: Nicaragua) - One of Tiger Island’s most unlikely winners and hailing from one of the most popular seasons, Dave played a slow, yet steady game, attracting allies to him and taking out threats such as Zeke and Ibuki at key times, ensuring an all-older tribe final three in the process. He then won with only four out of nine jury votes in a split decision, instantly becoming a controversial winner. On his second time out, can Dave defend his title from naysayers and prove his merit as a winner?
William Zorrall Hellmann (Winner of Tiger Island: San Juan del Sur) - William made a splash on the second Blood vs. Water season by winning the first Exile duel against his granddaughter, Sadie, and then easily made it through to the merge where he and Sadie ran the game until the end. Surviving even after their side lost a rock draw and dismantling notorious power couples Chi and Haley and Kate and Brandon, William got his pair all the way to the end where he won the game and became one of Tiger Island’s oldest winners. Can he show that he’s still got it eleven seasons later and get himself a second win?
Drake Margolis (Winner of Tiger Island: David vs. Goliath) - Starting off on the Goliath tribe, Drake made all the right moves to win David vs. Goliath, even after he seemed in early trouble when the Goliaths fell in on themselves after the first tribe swap. Still, he fought back the tribe’s temptation to vote him out by mobilizing rumors about Jessica’s treachery to vote her out for good. He continued his historical conquests after the merge, first recruiting Marnie against Amie and then throwing her to the dogs or whoever. He did the same to his close ally, Danni, after a null vote left them as the only vulnerable players at the final five. He then earned his way into the final three by making fire and ultimately won the game, going the real long distance all the way to the end. Can Drake come through the right open doors to win once again, or will he find those doors shut in his face?
Christine Shannard (Winner of Tiger Island: Tanzania) - Tiger Island’s most recent winner, taking the title just last season, Christine slipped through the cracks of an unfortunate swap to meet up with a united Damu majority at the merge. Easily coasting through into the finale as the last woman standing, Christine took out key threats in Tonio and Gordon, her peachy social game and old-school strategy eventually earning her the win. Can Christine become the first Tiger Island player to win two consecutive seasons or will she fall victim to another former champion?
See you soon for Tiger Island's landmark 40th season!

2020.05.24 15:37 c-lings A (very lengthy) examination of Nick and Jess throughout the show + thoughts on the last two episodes of Season 7

Hello everyone! Having finished the series for the first time yesterday (did a two week binge when I found out it had come to Netflix in the UK, since it was a show that I’d always had an eye on), there’s been a lot on my mind about it. As a whole, I *loved* it — the characters and their development (and there can be a lot of nuances in this regard), the insane premises of comedy — this show really connected with me emotionally, and it’s easily one of my favourite shows ever. Having said that though, I came out of Season 7 feeling…a little underwhelmed.
Before I discuss Season 7, I do want to contextualise my feelings on the show to present my underlying biases. Having said that, the scope of this can be infinite, so I’ll try and hone it a little by doing a season-by-season recap with an especial focus through the lens of Nick and Jess. That’s not to say that the other characters weren’t compelling in their own right (they definitely were) — it’s just that I have a feeling this will already be very lengthy, which I can understand is a turn-off. I’ll mark the “recap” with lines too, so if you want to skip it, that’s perfectly okay. I should of course preface this with the most apparent bias: I loved Nick and Jess as a couple, and that never changed throughout.
As for the seasons: not much to write about Season 1 and 2, as I think their quality (especially Season 2) and the Jess/Nick story there speaks for itself. Season 3 on the other hand is a bit more of an irksome affair.
I felt the inclusion of Coach in Season 3 felt forced and diluted the group dynamics and relationships (though I did feel he clicked by Season 4, but then he left again). Schmidt for the first 9 episodes or so is a difficult arc, but retrospectively it’s pivotal for his character arc (which, as an aside, is magnificently woven throughout the show). As for the Nick/Jess relationship, I felt that they wrote it poorly by following a repetitive structure of ‘Nick acts like a child; Jess fixes him’. I felt that this structure was disingenuous to the relationship that the prior two seasons had built up, as while sure Jess did take care of him, one of the reasons they worked is because they were a relationship of equals. They had their differences, but they both healthily supported and encouraged each other — Season 3 largely rejected this lateral idea. Furthermore, restricting the two to only scenes of them as a couple weakened both characters as well as the show. By the time they did break up, I understood why — the writers needed a soft reset, but it bugged me that things had gotten to where they were. Nevertheless I accepted what they’d setup as the model for the breakup: both characters needed to confront themselves and grow.
After a disappointing Season 3 (which still had bright moments to clarify — I was just offering my specific points of critique), Season 4 was a massive turnabout. I loved Season 4, and in my view, it had some of the most consistently great comedy of the show (also of course, the rebuilding of Schmidt and Cece as friends to the ultimate pay-off was also excellent — but again, can’t talk about everything). I also appreciated the parallel relationships concept — Jess dating Ryan, and Nick dating Kai to show people who were similar and “perfect” for them, but for those to ultimately not work out because they weren’t relationships that allowed either of them to grow. However, I really did not like Ryan, because his character to me was simply “attractive British guy” — he had no semblance of flaws or depth, which just made him feel really bland (and not much of a character at all — especially in a show filled with such strong ones). Kai wasn’t necessarily complex either, but her role was minimal and unobtrusive by comparison to Jess and Ryan, who were given a lot more screen time as a serious couple (which only accentuated the flaws of Ryan as a character). I also think they wrote off both relationships a little too weak (Kai leaves on a punchline, albeit one that has some meaning, whereas Ryan ghosts her and ironically shows a smidge of personality for once in not being there), but I digress, because of the overall direction for Nick and Jess: the beautiful slow burn.
While I was going through Season 4, I was noticing how they’d gone at lengths to separating Nick and Jess — for the first half or so, they essentially had little-to-no scenes together. Initially, this bothered me because even if you’re not pairing them romantically, their dynamic together is one of the cornerstones of the show. I reflected on this however, as the realistic fact that they were exes, and even though they did address the awkwardness in “Cruise”, there had to be a little bit of separation — they were still friends, so having that space was an appropriate way of going about it. What sold me on this was the little touches of them becoming closer again — in “LAXmas”, Jess gets Winston and Nick the first class tickets to Chicago, but even though they’re in their First Class cabin and ready to fly, Nick still detects that the sadness in Jess, and he gives up those travel plans to be there for her — the show cleverly covers this by having all the friends come back to support Jess, but the fact that it was Nick who noticed and then initiated that did stick with me. Then later, when Ryan ghosts Jess, while everyone else is bored at the Portland trip, Nick again is sensitive to how Jess is feeling and suggests that they go on her planned tour. Similarly again, it’s covered that “all the friends” go on her trip, but Nick is clearly the driving force for this. This then builds towards their scene in her childhood bedroom that’s emotionally gripping, but still appropriately pulls the reins. It was by this point that I “got” why they were separated and appreciated these more tender moments. This builds towards that scene in “Panty Gate” where it’s Nick who sits Coach down and talks with him about the long-term future (which was one of the points that led Nick and Jess to break up in the first place). That talk very much touches Jess (and shows Nick’s character), and though the pair joke at the end that 40-50 years down the line, it’s probably Winston who’s there beside them, the subtext is clear. This builds in the Season 4 finale with the AssStrat mug, which after discussing their relationship, they throw the mug away…only for them to both later try and retrieve it at night at separate times. Now of course, Winston being Winston, kept the mug for his own reasons (to be fair, it was a waste of a perfectly good mug), but I interpret the mug as being symbolic of them as a couple…in the end, neither were really ready to close the lid on it. So, I really appreciated how Season 4 developed the two.
Season 5 was interesting. It has its lulls here and there, but its overarching story (with Schmidt and Cece), as well as the development of the characters allow for some great storytelling moments (still some comedy gold of course — we really can’t forget the guys having a fisticuffs in a desert with Katy Perry’s Roar playing through). I think they do a good job with Nick/Jess again here with the slow burn. Reagan is meant to be the opposite of Jess, but Nick’s relationship with her is an essential part of his growth and the two coming back together.
We have “Goosebumps Walkaway” where Jess’s underlying feelings for Nick are very clear (“He’s the only person I’d ever go in a duct with”…”He kind of sneaks up on you”…”[kisses you like a coal miner]…after a long day in the caves”) — from Jess’s side, by being the mediator in Nick/Reagan, her feelings for Nick begin to slowly bubble. Her getting with Sam is perfect from a story perspective because in a sense, it allows her to come to terms with her past. Her relationship with Sam is filled with moments of her and Nick — like her learning that Nick gave her the Cubs helmet — which she thought was entirely thrown together — but was in fact filled with great meaning as it was a memento of his passed father. That Nick goes so far as to break it for Jess shows just how much he cares for her, and that Jess frames it for him later shows the reciprocation. That the Iron Curtain and True American (which really kickstarted and broke up Nick/Jess respectively) is what serves as the scene for the breakup of Jess/Sam is appropriate and Sam’s parting words “It’s Nick” is just an incredible scene and begins the full-blown realisation that she never stopped loving Nick (and from the wedding — whether it’s her realising the bank account “doesn’t really matter” or the scene where she tells Nick to realise how incredible he is — she’s finally confronted herself and grown.
On Nick’s side, the relationship with Reagan serves to show his growth. Even with Jess as mediator, season 5-6 is very much the build-up of Nick’s character — he’s more emotionally mature, wants to express his feelings and communication, desires for deeper connection, etc. — he very much grows into the person that Jess wanted, just as Jess grew herself. Season 5 is very carefully sprinkled with tender moments of the two, and there is a moment that I can’t quite recall is Season 5 or 6, where there’s tension between Nick and Jess over Nick’s relationship with Reagan, and Nick has an outburst where he says to Jess something along the lines of “no matter what I do [for you], it’s never good enough”. Even though he was talking technically about Jess’s reaction to his and Reagan’s relationship, that line speaks volumes as to the purpose of him and Reagan. Nick and Reagan, was deep down, whether he knew it or not, always about doing right for Jess.
It boils to what I feel is an understated point about Nick — his overthinking and nature of his love for Jess. It’s easy to regard Nick as lazy, and to an extent he is, but that “laziness” to me is the product of his low self-esteem, his anxiousness that’s brought up throughout the show. Whether it’s him telling Jess in “Injured” that he’s simply afraid, or “Virgins” where his father reassures that him that while he doesn’t have to do anything he doesn’t want to, he doesn’t need to overthink everything as the best stuff in life is when you appreciate what’s around you and not overthink it (which was always Jess); Winston has a great moment with him about this in Season 7 too (about the reason for his procrastination — which is really about his procrastination not just for writing but just for life in general). In applying it to Jess, Nick fell in love with her from the very beginning, but he never did anything about it. He never played jealous or sabotage anything — in fact, he unconditionally supported her and was always there for her. That slip of the tongue in “Cooler” (where he says he doesn’t want him and Jess to kiss “like that”) — he never expected them to be together — he loved her but she was too good for him, and it was never in the realm of possibility for him. That explains much of his actions of them when they weren’t dating, because he never had the internal confidence to believe he deserved that love, so it was closed off for him. Jess on the other hand needed the push to realise she did always love him; these were their individual journeys that kept them apart. It’s why when he breaks up with Reagan in Season 6, and his conversation with Bob (“she has the biggest heart, part lighthouse, part compass”), the beautiful exchange with Schmidt to push him for once in his life to “not be afraid”) — it was always Jess.
I’ve sort of devolved from the season-by season recap at this point. I will note though that I was not a fan of the first half of Season 6. At all. I *hated* the reappearance of Robby in Season 5, and especially Season 6 — nothing against the guy, but he felt like a total charisma vacuum (which was part of his character I guess), and he sucked a lot of wind out of the show especially in Season 6. He and Jess did not need to get together, and in general the first half of Season 6, a few funny moments aside, is disastrous and just…boring filler. I suppose it’s obvious that I loved the build up in the second half of Season 6 of them getting together, and I agree that we needed a little *something* after they kiss in the elevator (as a side, I love that it’s Dirty Dancing that pushes Jess almost as much as I love the speech Schmidt gave Nick). Personally, I would’ve been happy with a bit of dialogue, but there is something powerful as well with having no words at all.
So now, the recap of their story is done, and I can address Season 7. I get why they did a time skip — if they didn’t, it would’ve just ended up panning like a revised Season 3. I also appreciated that the characters are now grown up. It’s a development that really manifested in the last few seasons, but it was appropriate, because as great as it is to see these loveable weirdos get caught up in all sorts of hijinks, there’s a beauty in seeing them grow past that, even if that comes at the expense of losing some comedy — it’s a sign a show has to end, but in a good way. I don’t really compare Season 7 to the rest because it’s meant to be different, and I treat it as if the show ended after Season 6, and Season 7 was just the bonus epilogue.
I’m mostly fine with it, and I don’t mind the engagement being drawn out, because while a little tedious, the drive-in theatre Dirty Dancing setup with the group watching, is in a way, perfect. I think my biggest issues with Season 7 come in the last two episodes, but more so the wedding.
I get it’s a sitcom. Weddings end bad. But something about Nick and Jess’s wedding just felt off. Even if you compare it to Schmidt and Cece’s wedding which technically went wrong, that still had lovely set pieces, important characters present, and the wedding at the loft is a beautifully fitting scene. Somehow, Nick and Jess’s wedding just doesn’t hit those high notes for me. By going excessively in the direction of the curse and everything going wrong, it just felt like the show was robbing the couple of the tender happy ending it deserved. I know going over-the-top was intentional, and I know the whole thing was a commentary on the rocky nature of their whole will-they-won’t-they, but it just felt like a joke that went too far (this felt like the real Engram Pattersky from the writers). They had a sweet enough ending, and it was just fine…but that was the issue. It was just there. It felt incredibly rushed and thrown-together, and I just did not like the direction. I don’t know if I’m alone in this, but I feel that Nick and Jess deserved better than that. It could be argued that Season 6’s direction was all over the place, but I’m willing to forgive it because of how well they built things at the end. Season 7 was really an opportunity to give them the moment they deserved, especially after the elevator scene at the end of Season 6, but it just rang hollow. I don’t hate sitcom trope weddings; I liked Schmidt and Cece, and for Brooklyn 99 fans, I liked Jake and Amy’s wedding, but I don’t know; I’d love to get more perspective on it, because it really soured me.
With the finale, there were a lot of clear nostalgic touches, but I don’t know if it was the wedding from the previous episode, but it was a little hollow. I get that they were going for a classic ‘nothing happening’ New Girl episode, and the whole thing being Winston’s greatest prank was certainly meta, but I also feel they could’ve pulled for more emotional strings for the finale. I recognise I have my own preferences, but the two final episodes just sort of ended the show with indifference. It was time for them to move on, and things did need to end, but I just felt like they hit the crescendo with the proposal, and what followed…just happened. It made Season 7 just feel very rushed.
I know this has been a long piece, so I guess, the point of this all was how did you all feel about the final two episodes of the show? Did it feel like an appropriate conclusion for Nick/Jess and the show as a whole? I suppose, this can just be a forum for thoughts about any parts of this.

2020.05.06 22:26 Ghost-Quartet 30 Albums You May Have Missed In 2017

Hi, for the month of April I did a series of writeups in the Daily Discussion threads about albums from 2017 (the year I became a pop fan) that I think were overlooked or underrated. They have been compiled here for your viewing pleasure, edited for brevity.

Across The Multiverse by Dent May

Genre/Length: Pop + Rock / 42 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: The Beach Boys, Electric Light Orchestra, staring at the night sky while walking through the city alone
Description: Across The Multiverse is an album about someone lost in space, always searching for something that they’re never quite sure if they already found. It’s a romantic sort of longing though, that special sort of sincerity that can only come from the most sardonic among us. Dent May’s voice wails as the big orchestrations clatter around him, his earnest vocals sounding somewhat detached and melancholy against the sea of instruments. This is counterbalanced by the straightforward lyrics, which lack in poeticism but make up for it with a sort of blunt charm. The album definitely has an old-school vibe to it with its classic lounge friendly rock style, but something about mixing the retro aesthetic with the spacey content really works. He’s just jamming out as he drifts through the universe, and he sounds great doing it.
Sample Track: “Across The Multiverse” is a really cute duet with Frankie Cosmos

Alive in Screen by nelward

Genre/Length: Bedroom Pop + Chiptunes / 21 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Kero Kero Bonito, Dorian Electra, being a #epicgamer
Description: nelward has experience with both scoring video games and making straightforward pop, so he’s able to balance the two worlds better than most, but it helps that his musical style is so off-the-wall that nothing would really feel out of place in one of his songs. The sheer audacity of it all and the nods to classic pop remind me a bit of the hyper pop movement, but his references draw from video game music and it gives his music a unique feeling. His has a distinctive vocal style that sees him striking strange pitches at times and jumping into falsetto, but this unusual form of crooning makes perfect sense within the internal logic of his music. Everything is almost chaotic, but in a very artificial kind of way. This aesthetic reflects the themes of the album well: it’s about (in my interpretation) filtering the real world through the artificial to help cope and understand. The rambling lyrics careen around random imagery like technology and food, but these minutiae are just sonic pleasures swirling around the core messages of the songs.
Sample Track: “seafoam breeze” is a quirky little song about colors, among other things.

American Neon by Protextor & Brother Bear

Genre/Length: Rap + Alt-Pop + Hip-Hop / 38 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: The Weeknd, Big Freedia, party rap
Description: The best way I can sum this album up is “a lot of fun;” sunny, dancing in the living room style pop anthems. Brother Bear (aka Matt Puckett of Mother Falcon, if that means anything to you) does a great job with the arrangements, leaning in to ’70s/‘80s sounds as well as more contemporary hip-hop to give the songs a vintage feel with a bit of an edge. Protextor’s rap skills are impressive but he also has surprising singing chops that make the choruses of the songs really soar. These two can’t seem to be contained to any one genre, constantly shifting styles between tracks from disco to funk to r&b; in spite of this shotgun approach the album feels very cohesive and maintains quality throughout. There’s even a feature from Cupcakke! This is such a well put together pop record I’m shocked it went so under the radar.
Sample Track: “Not Tonight” is a disco-pop song that feels like it was lifted right from the ’80s.

Awesome by Beverly

Genre/Length: Pop / 53 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Ariana Grande, BoA, the Radio Disney era
Description: If you’ve ever wondered what Ariana Grande might have sounded like if she’d debuted as a teen pop star in the ‘90s, it might’ve been something like Beverly. A powerhouse vocalist with an old-school sensibility, Beverly feels like she fell through time and into modern Japan clutching this LP to her chest. Her throwback sound is very versatile, scanning the annals of pop history for doo-wop cuts, ‘90s bubblegum/r&b tracks, soulful ‘00s contemporary pop jams, and all sorts of other pleasantly nostalgic treats. It’s her voice that really elevates the tracks though, she’s an incredibly powerful singer who sells the hell out of all the songs. While maybe not the most groundbreaking project it’s still an expertly assembled pop album handled by a strong vocalist, and those are always welcome. If you’ve been missing pop that’s huge and loud, this could be it.
Sample Track: “Empty” could easily be an old school Christina Aguilera cut.

The Band’s Visit by David Yazbeck

Genre/Length: Broadway / 42 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: anything tbh
Description: This is one of the most powerful musicals to have come out in a long time and it produced an absolutely gorgeous cast album. The musical tells the story of an Egyptian orchestra who, due to a miscommunication, end up stranded in a remote town in the Israeli desert and must spend the night with the townspeople. Not much really happens in the show, but it’s a tender exploration of the human condition and the loneliness and longing for connection that we all share, and the songs really reflect this. The music is very intimate, something not usually associated with a big budget Broadway musical, but the simmering music combined with the all star performances from the cast illustrate the story beautifully. The composer pulls from Middle Eastern styles, and there are beautiful instrumental interludes peppered throughout the album that showcase this even more, and the lyrics are breathtaking as well. It’s a modern classic of both music and theatre that everyone should listen to.
Sample Track: “Omar Sharif” is so smoky and heavy and sexy.

Color Crush by ELRIS

Genre/Length: Pop / 20 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: LOONA 1/3, early MIKA, secretly streaming “ME!” by Taylor Swift
Description: Color Crush is like spending all day at a carnival, it’s a journey packed with excitement that gradually winds down into a gentle parade of lights. This album is so genuinely joyful, with every part being calibrated for maximum fun. True to its name it’s full of colorful compositions packed with little flourishes that give everything a playful, imaginative feel. The writing is sharp, and the compositions are smartly rooted in heavy 808s that cut through the noise and give the album some kick beneath the cute. The members of ELRIS are very talented and their ebullient voices have surprisingly diverse tones that carry the album through its weaker moments. On the whole this is a short album, but one where every track is worth while.
Sample Track: “Wonderland Girl” is my favorite track, it has a really bouncy chorus

Creature! by Nitty Scott

Genre/Length: Rap / 32 Minutes
For Fans Of: Princess Nokia, Jamila Woods, alt-r&b albums with a concept
Description: Creature! is an appropriate name for this album because Nitty Scott is an absolute beast. I love her voice, she oozes confidence and her flow is so clear and natural. You get every word she says, which is good because she has some things to say here. The album tells the loose narrative of a woman named Negrita who falls “down the rabbit hole” into pre-colonial Puerto Rico and reconnects with her roots, and through this character Scott is able to express her own experiences as an Afro-Latina woman. She appropriates “exoticism” for herself here and allows the sounds of the Caribbean to haunt this album, and they blend perfectly into the poppin’ beats to give the album a unique sound. Magical realism is often a part of her aesthetic, but it works particularly well here. She finds time for both ferocity and fun on this album, managing to address the struggles of her ancestors while still celebrating being a badass rap chick.
Sample Track: “Creature” is a bruja bop.

Genre/Length: J-Idol Metal + Synthpop / 35 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Poppy, Dreamcatcher, anime music from hell
Description: Branding themselves as “ultra-dark” and writing songs about witches and Lovecraft, NECRONOMIDOL are a gem from Japan’s colorful “alt-idol” scene. Their concept is that they fuse metal with traditional idol sounds, lacing their shredding guitars with synths and electronic elements. It’s an interesting blend that gives them a broad appeal to fans of both metal and pop and this album is a great showcase of that. They offer headbanger metal tracks and foot stomping synth pop tracks in equal measure, all with that wickedly dark flair that gives the group its name. “Creepy children singing” is a horror movie staple but NECRONOMIDOL weaponize it, juxtaposing the members’ youthful voices against the creepy production to haunting effect. This album has such a goth aesthetic while still having a lot to offer musically, and it’s a great introduction to an interesting music scene.
Sample Track: “4.7L” is a DDR-esque darkwave banger

FEELS by Snoh Aalegra

Genre/Length: Soul + R&B / 41 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Summer Walker, Amy Winehouse, romantic movies
Description: Though this album has a somewhat silly title it’s actually a very elegant exploration of love by one of the finest voices new voices in r&b. The chilly (almost lo-fi) r&b arrangements are sparse but detailed, and supplemented by touches of old school hip-hop, Motown, lounge music, and more. This vintage sensibility is draped around Aalegra like a cloak as she glides through the album, capturing every different kind of melodrama there is to romance with a knowing sigh. Her rich, raspy voice is like water that flows through her songs, and she plays well with the featured artists too. The sheer style of this album is impeccable, no matter what Snoh Aalegra is expressing she makes it sound effortlessly cool. That’s the word for the whole album really: effortless.
Sample Track: “Fool For You” showcases Snoh Aalegra’s ability to be absolutely mesmerizing.

Freedom Highway by Rhiannon Giddens

Genre/Length: Country/Americana / 49 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Dolly Parton, Elle King, Janet Jackson’s experiments with non-dance genres
Description: Freedom Highway is an exploration of the struggles of black people in America. The stories she tells are harsh but presented simply and matter-of-factly, making them feel intensely human rather than melodramatic or preachy. Some of these songs are covers of classics, most of them are original compositions, and you can’t even tell which are which because of how timeless her writing is. These songs are brought to life by rich compositions of thumping percussion and twanging strings that make the perfect backdrop for her haunting voice. While her music is accessible it’s way more on the “country” side of “pop-country,” leaning in to the blues, jug band music, spirituals, gospel, folk ballads, dixieland jazz, and probably more styles that I can’t even name, but there’s also the odd hip-hop/rap track sprinkled in there, blending seamlessly in with the rest of the songs (which, I think, is the point).
Sample Track: “We Could Fly” got rave reviews for how ageless it sounds

From The Outside by Hey Violet

Genre/Length: Pop-Rock + Synthpop / 41 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Avril Lavigne, P!nk, the band Lindsay Lohan is in in Freaky Friday (2003)
Description: Hey Violet feel like that girl you knew in high school who was kind of a mess and always had some insane story to tell about doing something that should have lander her in jail, but her eyeliner was always perfect and she was the coolest chick you knew. Between the DGAF vocals, the robust pop production, and “fuck you” topics this album has spunk in spades. There’s an unexpected diversity of tracks, touching on disco, rock, straightforward pop, emo, even a few cheerleader-esque tracks that call to mind “Hollaback Girl;” it feels old-school in a way with how it mines the history of pop, but it’s more retro-chic than anything else because Hey Violet are far too cool to seem behind the times. This album just slaps in a way that many albums coming out today don’t, and they should have become a bigger force in the pop scene after this.
Sample Track: “Hoodie” has such a titanic chorus.

Half-Light by Rostam

Genre/Length: Indie / 52 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Rufus Wainwright, Shy Girls, digging through music for feelings like a pop archeologist
Description: Rostam had already cut his teeth in the music business for a decade as a member of Vampire Weekend and a writeproducer for other artists by the time, which is why it’s interesting that this album sounds so… innocent. It feels like a dreamcatcher that’s caught bits of dreams and memories as they’ve flown past and now they hang flickering like Christmas lights. These moments are tender, melancholy, inconsequential, earth shattering, but all presented in a fashion that makes them feel familiar and approachable. Rostam’s voice melts over the tracks like butter, his warm and throaty tone making him blend into the fabric of the music in a way that makes him sound all encompassing rather than shapeless. The album sounds like everything and nothing at once, it’s easy to listen to and a little difficult to get the most out of, but the rewards are enough to keep you coming back for more.
Sample Track: “Bike Dream” is a sexual yet sweet little song.

Hypocrites by Imani Coppola

Genre/Length: Rap + Electropop / 37 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Charli XCX, Kesha, alt-pop girls on the fringes of the mainstream
Description: Imani Coppola is the kind of artist who does whatever she wants, a rebellious spirit whose chosen field is pop music. Her music always feels trendy and relevant but ever so slightly… off, somehow. Hypocrites is a great example of that, a pseudo-concept album devoted to exploring modern life wherein Imani gives her sardonic takes on everything from online dating to how awesome she thinks she is to a diss track directed at her cat. There’s clearly some level of parody to the over the top persona she’s projecting, but exactly how much is left up to the listener. Whatever her true intention, her characteristic witty lyricism makes the songs really fun to listen to, even if you roll your eyes every now and then. Musically it’s an eclectic mix of autotune drenched electro pop and more organic tracks which pull from all sorts of random styles, not her best work but her lyricism and strong ear for melodies keep it a solid listen.
Sample Track: “Just Feels Good” was originally written for Rachel Platten

Last Cinderella: Original Soundtrack by Takeshi Hanzawa

Genre/Length: Dance / 77 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Brasstracks, Meghan Trainor, Disco
Description: This is the soundtrack to a J-Drama I’ve never seen, I just stumbled across it while searching for something else, but I’m glad that I did because it’s a really cute album. Takeshi Hanzawa (who also records under the name FreeTempo) is a fantastic electronic producer and his compositions on this album are fantastic. It’s mainly based in warm synth-heavy house and a funky big band sound (with some non-obtrusive vocals to spice things up), but he finds a lot of wiggle room within these styles. The songs capture a great selection of moods like peppy, hopeful, melancholy, anxious, and everything else you could need. It’s a surprisingly seductive album, you start off grooving along to some cheery dance music and then a few minutes later you’re sitting there reflecting on your choices to gentle piano music. It may be an out of context soundtrack, but good music always connects.
Sample Track: “23:59” is such a thrilling piece of house music

The Lure: Original Motion Picture Soundtrack (songs by Ballady i Romanse)

Genre/Length: Synthpop + Rock / 50 Minutes
For Fans Of: Poppy, Spellling, twisted indie horror films
Description: The Lure is a film loosely inspired by The Little Mermaid if the little mermaid were actually two man-eating mermaid sisters who get a job singing at a cabaret in ‘80s Poland. As if that wasn’t wild enough, it’s also a musical with a kickass soundtrack! While I would recommend watching it, the soundtrack works perfectly well independently and still captures the surreal, goth aesthetic of the film through a strong collection of pop songs. The cabaret that the mermaids work at in the film is pretty seedy, and that grimy cheapness is reflected in the crunchy, almost karaoke sounding retro-synth music. The album also veers into metal at times, and haunting “siren songs” are peppered throughout the album as well, adding mystery and danger to the mix. The songs on the album are trying to sound pretty but they just can’t shake the darkness that lurks beneath them. It’s a wholly unique project and a very seductive listen.
Sample Track: Though not on the official soundtrack, the version of “I Came To The City” by the original band shows off their music well.

Never Let Your Heart Get Hard by For You The Moon

Genre/Length: Indie Pop + Electropop / 29 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Panic! At The Disco, Paramore, basement shows from unknown bands
Description: For You The Moon is a collaboration project between two indie artists (Neil Reynolds and Cathryn Wake) and while I don’t know anything about either of them, they make a great impression here. They’re strong producers with big voices and despite the low budget they serve up huge melodies and ambitious production that’s constantly introducing new ideas to keep things fresh and moving. The album has a sharp electropop sound but it also has touches of vaudeville (owing to Cathryn’s theatre background) and emo rock (Neil is also the frontman of a band). I love how bold this album is, It’s a little bit crunchy at times, but I think that just adds to the appeal. They’re a nice shot of energy if you’ve been looking for some electric indie pop.
Sample Track: “Head In The Clouds” feels like something that would have gotten overplayed on the radio.

Now, We by Lovelyz

Genre/Length: Synthpop / 42 Minutes
For Fans Of: LOONA, Meghan Trainor, daydreaming you’re a princess in a fairy tale
Description: Since they debuted Lovelyz have crafted a “signature sound” that revolves around dreamy synths and tight harmonies (plus to a lesser extent chiptunes and theatre influences), and this album is the peak of their formula. Lovelyz are unapologetically frothy, but beneath their innocent aesthetic hides surprisingly complex song craft. While some of the songs on the album are just bubblegum-pop perfected, many of them are somewhat unusual sounding and offer twists via unusual arrangements and song structures. Their composers know what they’re doing and root their music in old school disco/pop/r&b sounds that allow them to be quirky while still maintaining that classic feel. The end result is a tight-yet-diverse album that’s intelligent for how sugary sweet it is.
Sample Track: Despite the world’s most generic title, “The” is an upbeat track with a spunky almost garage-band feel to it.

Pearl & The Oysters by Pearl & The Oysters

Genre/Length: Bubblegum Pop / 36 Minutes
For Fans Of: The Cardigans, Meghan Trainor, retrofuturism
Description: Pearl & The Oysters feel like a band that would be playing during a party scene in a ‘60s beachsploitation film, except that movie is set on the moon. A self-described “raygun pop” act, they filter that classic ’60s bubblegum sound through a layer of synths peppered with flashes of r&b and the result is a throwback that still sounds fresh thanks to the sharp production and slightly left-of-center writing. Their music sits on the right side of twee, remaining fun and carefree without being too obnoxiously sweet. They pay tribute to the Space Age, exotica, Wendy Carlos, everything you could want and more.
Sample Track: “Vitamin D” is the band’s favorite song.

The Pink Formosa by BAER

Genre/Length: Electropop / 17 Minutes
For Fans Of: Selena Gomez, NIKI, local small time pop girls with bops
Description: Though she’s recently made a shift towards being a baddie rap chick (her latest single was imaginatively titled “Ass Fat”) but she began her career as an aspiring pop girl. It’s a shame she didn’t continue in this direction because I absolutely love this EP; it’s a strong collection of trendy pop songs that still feel very fresh today. Some the unusual instrumental choices (the EP is meant to be influenced by her upbringing in China) and her somewhat airy, somewhat raspy voice give the album a sense of personality and she keeps the energy up while maintaining a chill vibe. The songs have themes of anticipation and reflection, an exploration of growing up and finding your place. For a fairly small artist she makes her songs feel very big, with cavernous production making the songs feel expansive and adventurous.
Sample Track: “Tuscany (feat. Roland Greco)” is such a good song, I listen to it every time it comes up on shuffle.

Policies Of Power by Samanta Urbani

Genre/Length: Pop / 22 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Dua Lipa, Charli XCX, ‘80s/‘90s pop classics
Description: A lot of the time people hear a synth and just go “oh it’s ‘80s inspired” but Urbani really draws out the essence of artists like Madonna and Janet Jackson, and she has the chops to pull it off. Her confident and flexible voice pairs well with the huge production of stuttering drums, wailing guitars, and crisp synths. There’s even extended dance breaks! While the songs are perfectly calibrated to pump you up and get those hands in the air, the lyrical content is very well written and keeps the songs from just feeling like pretty noise. She provides nuanced examinations of the power dynamics that underscore her relationships; what drives her away, what pulls her back, and everything in between. She promised power, and she delivered.
Sample Track: “U Know I Know” has an ear worm of a hook and some tricky little lyrics.

Pollinator by Blondie

Genre/Length: Pop + New Wave / 45 Minutes
For Fans Of: Blondie, Sigrid, albums you can both scream along to in the car and listen to quietly while sitting at home
Description: Pollinator is a deceptively strange album, tapping an unconventional menagerie of collaborators including Joan Jett, Blood Orange, Charli XCX, Sia, a pre-breakdown Lucian Piane, film YouTuber Adam Johnston, and a feature from the guy who voices Linda Belcher on Bob’s Burgers. These diverse voices and styles are filtered through that classic Blondie sound and the end result is an eclectic track list crackling with strong hooks and melodies. There’s a loose, almost psychedelic feeling to the album thanks to abstract lyrics and a general sense of “fuzziness” that’s pleasant to listen to. The songs are somewhat subdued because they can trust a legend like Debbie Harry to carry them, and she remains as powerful a performer as ever. Although they’ve perhaps become more unassuming, Blondie’s music remains as captivating as ever.
Sample Track: “Fun” is an edgy little track, also check out the disco remix

Pop Food by Jack Stauber

Genre/Length: Indie-Pop / 36 Minutes
For Fans Of: Surfjan Stevens, Igor by Tyler, The Creator, internet weirdness that feels authentic
Description: Pop Food is definitely Jack’s most accessible record thanks to the strong pop focused writing that features robust instrumentals, prominent melodies, and catchy hooks. It’s an unusual sounding album, but unusual in a comfortingly familiar way. Jack has a very distinctive voice which is incredibly flexible and emotive despite him sounding like he’s singing through a mouth full of marbles, a technique that lends his music a unique feeling. It’s a bit difficult to parse out what he’s saying but the lyrics are good too, abstract but honest and relatable. A big part of what makes Jack Stauber so successful as an artist is the solid, very human core that his work draws from; there’s an almost vulnerability to the weirdness as if the layers of filters and #aesthetic allow him to be truly free.
Sample Track: “Candy Eyes” melts me every time I hear it, such a touching love song.

Remember Me: Essential, Vol. 1 by RuPaul

Genre/Length: Dance / 41 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Lady Gaga, Robyn, remixes that sound like new songs
Description: One of three albums (💀) released in 2017, Remember Me takes songs from RuPaul’s under appreciated earlier albums and gives them the old school remix treatment. The rich r&b/house sounds that made up the original tracks are deconstructed and pieced back together as electric dance floor mixes, a wonderful new context for these classic hits. He worked with several different producers on this project who give this project shades, most notably the ear candy electro pop of the KUMMERSPECK tracks and the almost sultry huskiness of the ylxr tracks. RuPaul’s music has become something of a side project in recent years, but projects like this show his legacy is definitely something to remember.
Sample Track: “Remember Me / Back To My Roots Medley” is heavy and hypnotic, a fresh take on one of Ru’s best songs.

Safe Haven by Ruth B

Genre/Length: Pop + Adult Contemporary / 47 Minutes
Description: Before Tik Tok was pumping out hits we had Vine, which spawned the massively successful “Lost Boy” which gave way to Ruth B’s debut album Safe Haven. Though not as commercially successful as “Peter Pan,” Safe Haven maintained the same dreamy qualities while adding an even poppier twist. The songs on this album are crafted around simple hooks and melodies, which are then bulked up by romantic pop production. Ruth B has a knack for storytelling and each song has a unique angle and a satisfying journey. It’s wise but in that youthful sort of way that tries so hard to be poetic and reach for something greater even when it doesn’t succeed it’s charming. It has a bit of the spark that the flash-in-the pan adult contemporary stars of the early ’00s had, updated with a more modern sensibility. Like many one-hit wonders, Ruth B. deserved better.
Sample Track: “Dandelions” is catchy, wistful, and romantic.

Shaneera by Fatima Al Qadiri

Genre/Length: Electronic + Dance / 21 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Grimes, M.I.A., video game soundtracks
Description: I’m going to link this interview with Fatima Al Qadiri where she talks about the meaning, background, and composition of this album because it’s very fascinating, but the abbreviated version is this: The EP takes its title from an Arabic slang term for a gender defying “evil queen,” though “evil” is a bit pejorative in this case. Al Qadiri notes that there’s no direct English translation of the term, but from my understanding it’s similar to Western conceptions of “fierceness” or being a “bad bitch.” A Shaneera terrorizes the gender binary, too loud to be contained, too sexual to be stopped, and that’s the spirit that Al Qadiri captures through energetic electronic music. An intoxicating blend of Arabic and Western electronic styles (with a dash of video game music thrown in), these are hot and heavy dance floor anthems that capture the wicked, mischievous spirit she’s going for perfectly. Voices shout at you from within the haze of music like they’re a final boss taunting you (or perhaps seducing you) as the bass hammers and synth melodies curl around your ankles. It’s a campy, chaotic, cinematic experience.
Sample Track: “Spiral” got a (mildly NSFW) music video

smile, and wave by SAINTE

Genre/Length: Pop-Rock / 23 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: P!nk, Paramore, female fronted rock acts from the Warped Tour era
Description: SAINTE is a side project by Taylor Jardine of the rock band We Are The In Crowd, and for her solo work she took things in a much poppier direction. And we all love a poppier direction. smile, and wave is a tight EP packed with electric hooks and vocals, with most of the songs being centered around self-discovery and cutting toxicity out of your life. The slammin’ guitars and drum licks of WATIC are still present but that spunky garage band energy has been polished to a colorful sheen, the rough edges smoothed out into something a little more plastic but no less compelling. It’s very cohesive but each song has a distinct enough idea and strong enough lyrics that they all really pop individually. I got a LOT of mileage out of this EP in 2017, and it’s something I always return to fondly.
Sample Track: “With Or Without Me” is a joyride right from the first two lines

Summer FM by Cyndi Seui

Genre/Length: Electrofunk / 44 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Aviators, city pop, YouTube videos of old songs playing over footage of ‘80s anime
Description: Cyndi Seui is confusingly named because he’s a man from Thailand, but fortunately the album is very straightforward. Inspired by the ideas of the vaporwave movement (less so the sound), with Summer FM he attempts to capture the feeling of listening to an imaginary radio station from another era. And he succeeds! The album is a steady stream of #mood music that feels gloriously kitschy and retro while still sounding relevant. Its shiny future funk stylings are spiced up by flashes of r&b/hip-hop, with distant vocals fading in and out just because they sound cool. Like vaporwave, what this album lacks in substance it makes up for in pure style. It really does feel like something to blast while riding down the coastline on a summer day, full of positive vibes and slick grooves.
Sample Track: “Summer Frequency Modulation”

The Valley by Betty Who

Genre/Length: Pop / 44 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Carly Rae Jepsen, Katy Perry, underrated pop girls
Description: The Valley refines the sprawling excellence of Betty’s debut album into a collection of tight pop songs that reach for hit potential, and the end result It’s a veritable smorgasbord for the discerning pop fan. She offers up pitch perfect pop perfection of every type she can think of: empowerment anthems, love songs, breakup jams, covers, collaborations, all of which come pack with monster choruses and delectable synth work. She can make you feel like you’re flying and tug at your heart strings and make you dance, and sometimes all three at once. By all accounts this should have been a star making album, and despite its underperformance it stands as one of the best pure pop albums of 2017.
Sample Track: “Beautiful (feat. Superfruit)” is a "love yourself" anthem done right

Video Game Hero by Barbie

Genre/Length: Electropop / 14 Minutes
  • For Fans Of: Sucker by Charli XCX, soundtracks to children’s movies
Description: This was actually the last direct to video Barbie movie and while that makes me sad, I’m at least glad the series could go out on such a high note. Video Game Hero was a great film with a great soundtrack, fittingly tapping into an electropop/dance sound that goes surprisingly hard. As you’d expect from the soundtrack to a direct to video Barbie film the songs are a sugar rush designed to hype up young girls, and I wouldn’t have it any other way. Though a little faceless, they make up for it in pep, and though formulaic, they make up for it with fun. I can’t pretend that this album is in any way highbrow but I also can’t deny that it’s enjoyable, and we could all use a little bit of unironic positive affirmation every now and then.
Sample Track: “Power Up” has a really fun instrumental.

We’re In Love And The World Is Ending by Tyler Cole

Genre/Length: Alt-Pop + Rock / 32 Minutes
For Fans Of: Kevin Abstract, Ryan Beatty, venting about the world on social media
Description: A kaleidoscope of genres, shifting between sounds as fluidly as it shifts through ideas. It’s an album full of surprises, you never know what the next track is gonna sound like just like you never know what Tyler Cole is going to say or do. As the title implies the album deals with anxiety surrounding both romance and the general shittiness of the world writ large, and while it verges on /im14andthisisdeep at points his delivery and emotions are so raw that it’s still effective. It’s cool to hear an album that’s so unconcerned by sounding strange or ugly; his lyrics might not be the most erudite and his warbling falsetto and throaty screams aren’t perfect but these elements are always compelling. The album in touch with the zeitgeist without being cliche, and although the persona that Cole presents is very Instagram-friendly you can hear the genuine fear underneath it all that’s driving him to write this.
Sample Track: “Bones (Pt. 1 & 2)” are a good display of the genre shifting nature of the album, I love the country-ish second half.
And that's that! What are some other underrated gems from this year?
